It’s cold and flu season!!! It has come with a vengeance too. It’s the worst flu season that experts have seen in a long time. And, to add to the matter, the flu vaccine doesn’t cover the strain of flu that is the most severe! It’s nuts, and when you get sick as a parent, you’re stuck with how to entertain your kids when you are sick.
Colds and the flu, zap your energy, sucks the life right out of you and honestly all you really want to do is lay in bed all day and sleep, but of course you can’t do that!
You have kids!!
Those little monsters need you to act as hall monitor so they don’t climb on windows and shelves and damage themselves or worse…your house! I’m kidding, clearly your little angels getting hurt is way more important than anything in our homes!
But, really, you have a cold, your coughing and you have a sore throat or you are hugging the porcelain thrown. Either way, your kids still need you, you still need to parent. When you are sick you have zero energy to entertain your kids so this is where I come in!
I am here to give you great ideas that allow you to recoup all while your children try not destroy your house!
I’m not going to drag this on! You’re probably sick right now which is why you have landed here!
8 ways to entertain your kids when you’re sick
1. Play Doctor
I love this because my toddlers love to take care of me, or play with their doctor set. You can lay on the couch where you are comfortable and let them doctor you up. I bought my kids this doctor set: Fisher-Price Medical Kit, for Christmas one year and it has been super great for when I am sick! Kids love to make you feel better and band-aids should be fully stocked in the house! Chances are you will be covered in band-aids!
2. Read Books
My kids love to read, so when I am feeling down; I grab a giant pile of books and get to it. We can read and read all day long! This doesn’t take a whole lot of energy, but if you have a sore throat then maybe this one isn’t your first go to! Do your kids like to read? What are some of your favorite books, I love to add to our collection; comment below!
3. Sick Day Bin
Take the opportunity to create a sick day bin! This would be a super special bin that only comes out when you or your significant other, and kids are sick! This is a special bin that holds special toys or things that only come out when someone is sick! What you will need is a Rubbermaid bin, size is up to your and your space. What to put in it?
- Books: They don’t have to be anything special, just books that are not seen all that often! Special books keep them interested!
- Games: Go Fish Cards, we love these ones:Go Fish: Card Game and we also like memory games, you can find these are any Target, Walmart, Meijer, etc.
- Playdough: Gah!!! I said it, when you are sick anything helps! Be brave!
- Play cars: Guys and gals love play cars, keep them in this bin and bust them out when you are sick!
4. Coloring Books
I am typically not a huge fan of keeping crayons, or makers. Mainly because my kids color on everything as soon as you turn your back. But thankfully, these are now ultra washable! Parent win, and I have gotten all of that stuff off carpet, walls, furniture, clothes, little bodies!!!! Great for when you are sick!
Magnets are a life saver!!! Keep these handy, ALWAYS! I keep ours in a Rubbermaid container on the top of my fridge! When I am sick, I bust these out and they keep my kids occupied for hours! Next to the traditional alphabets, we love animal magnets! Melissa & Doug 20 Animal Magnets in a Box
6. Go Find Me a….. Game
My kids love finding things or getting into things they shouldn’t. Like getting my glasses out of my drawer and putting their little fingers all over them, bringing them too me like oh hey mama, I found your glasses…. am I am like YYYAAAAYYYYY, thanks for the smudges! Either way, ask your kid to find you a sock, or a baby doll, the options are endless! Make it something they can reach and will not put them in harm!
Grab your hair bin, brush, clips, hair ties and let your kids go nuts! Barely any energy emitted here! Let your kids make your hair like Elsa’s or Rapunzel, let them give you a Mohawk, pig tails, who cares! It will actually feel nice! I love when my kids play with my hair!
8. I Am Not Above Putting On a Movie!
When all else fails, Elsa saves the day! Let it goooooo!!! That’s me singing! It’s no bueno and my kids would tell you that too! When we start singing that song, they kind of give me this look like ehhhh maybe….not, just….no! I am not a parent that is above screen time. You know what sometimes, you just need to! Let them watch a movie, while you rest on the couch! They will not be ruined for it, I promise!
