When I graduated high school, my dream was to be a neural surgeon. Becoming a doctor was the only thing I felt would satisfy my career goals. The human body works in a very interesting way and I was overly fascinated by that. I thought that was how you determined your future was by going to school to learn more about something that really interested you, then making a career out of it.
But, I made different life decisions. I married a real smooth talker at 18. He made me believe I was not smart enough to be a doctor and I let a man tell me I wasn’t smart enough! He had a business degree and thought that was the only thing I could do. So if I wanted to make my life easier I had to do what he said. Thus starting my journey of obtaining my Bachelors of Science in Business Administration. Now the drama with my ex-husband I will get to in another post. That post will be on domestic abuse and how to get out! Stay tuned for it!
It took me 8 years to get my BSBA. Took way too long, had to withdrawal from some classes and simply didn’t pass others. It was a long time and some serious hard work. The life decisions I made, caused me to avoid going to university with the rest of my classmates and experiencing campus life. That is a part of my life that I will never get back and I do regret it but life leads us down certain paths for a reason and that path led me to my life now!
I exited the workforce when I was pregnant with my first daughter. During that time, I was determined to be a stay at home mom and full-time student. I stuck to that goal and I ended up finishing one month after I had my second daughter was born. I finished my finance capstone with a 18 mos. old and newborn at home! That is determination folks. The decision to finish school was a very hard one. I had to make certain sacrifices to make that goal come true. My husband was the greatest motivator to finish my degree and as a result I consider it “our” degree versus just mine.
I went to Trident University International for my BSBA. This is an online learning institution and I really enjoyed this university because of their curriculum. I had taken classes at Eastern New Mexico University and Walsh College, these are traditional universities but I found that I was not successful. Exams are difficult for me, not because I did not study it was because I felt as though I was memorizing the information versus learning it. Trident tests your knowledge by applying what you have learned to real world situations in the form of an essay. I spent 10-12 hours per week on my education.
Currently, I am enrolled at Southern New Hampshire University for my grad program. My program is Masters of Business Administration with a major in Health Care Management. This is my way of getting into the health care field but into the business aspect of it.
When my husband and I started our family, I was a working professional. I knew that I wanted to stay home with our children until they were in school full-time. In the mean time I wanted to make sure I was actively pursuing goals I had set for myself and goals that were really important to me such as pursing an education.
I plan to go back to work when the girls go to school and I knew that it would be wise of me to finish my undergrad and complete my masters! If you have considered going back to school or if it is something you would like to do but don’t know how to make that work then this is for you!
These days, having a college education is so important. In order to be competitive in the workforce, it is needed. I really cringe when moms tell me that they do not have time in their day to work on school. There is always time to focus on YOU! Don’t forget that, if this is something you want to pursue then you CAN find the time to finish! It is also great inspiration to your children!
How I do it And You Can to!
Below will list the elements of my day that I changed to find time for me!
Wake Up Early!
I know!!! Your kiddies could already wake up early and your probably exhausted. I make this work by not get my children out of their rooms until 8AM. They wake up before 8 but they are in their cribs talking, singing, or playing with their stuffed animals. I wake up at 6AM, this gives me 2 hours every morning to drink my coffee, watch the news and work on school! I LOVE THIS TIME, I sacrifice sleep to have a few minutes for myself! Its glorious! Try it out and see if you can wake up before your children and try to incorporate a specific time that you get them from their rooms or a time when they can leave! This is not mean but instead it is a great opportunity for teaching your child independent play!
Nap time or quiet time!
My children are still young so we have nap time! I have both my daughters on the same nap schedule so this gives me another 2-3 hours every day to focus on school! Granted, if I used my morning hours efficiently then I do not need to work on school this entire time! If your children are passed the napping stage… I’m sorry mama; then incorporate quiet time! This is a great opportunity for your children to whined down and play in their rooms or their play room quietly!
If you are in a time crunch for making deadlines, seek help!
I have a very tiny list of people I trust to watch my babies, but these people are 100% reliable and always willing to help me out! If you have babysitters or family willing to watch your kiddos on occasion, then enlist their help! If you have deadlines or exams to take then this is a great opportunity to have a sitter and maybe leave the house to finish your school task!
Ultimately, this is a decision you make to better yourself but also a decision that will benefit your family! I wanted to finish my grad program because it is something I wanted for myself! Just because you are stay at home mom does not mean you forget about your own goals! Remember who you are and if you had goals or aspirations about having a college degree then this is a great time to go back to school! Online education gives you the opportunity to work on school anywhere without have to step foot in a classroom! I love being a stay at home mom, it brings me so much joy and I hope that I am an inspiration to my babies! I found the time and you can too!
